Powers of Attorney for Children Age 18+

Written By: Kevin Reardon, CFP®

As students head off to college this fall, many families are surprised to learn that once a child turns 18, parents no longer have automatic access to their medical or financial information. In the event of an emergency, illness, or unexpected situation, it can be difficult for parents or grandparents to help without the proper legal documents in place.

Before your student leaves for campus, consider having them sign a Healthcare Power of Attorney and a Financial Power of Attorney. These documents allow a trusted person to make medical decisions or assist with financial matters if the student is unable to do so themselves. While no one likes to think about worst-case scenarios, putting these simple documents in place can provide peace of mind and help ensure someone can step in when needed. It’s a small step that can make a big difference during an unexpected event.
